State notes

Virginia reports long-term care data for Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities and Multicare facilities. Virginia defines multicare facilities as facilities that offer multiple types of services (e.g. skilled nursing, assisted living, rehabilitation, etc.). COVID Tracking Project puts Nursing Homes in the Nursing Home category, Assisted Living Facilities into the Assisted Living category, and Multicare facilities into the Lumped or Other category. Data is reported in two locations: Virginia’s main dashboard and the Virginia Long-term Care Task Force page on the Virginia Department of Health website. Virginia reports cumulative and outbreak data. Virginia provides facility-level data for Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities and Multicare facilities. Virginia reports staff and resident cases and staff and resident deaths as combined. Data is cumulative since January 1, 2020.

Virginia provides cumulative totals for resident and staff cases and resident and staff deaths and number of facilities with a case.

Virginia provides outbreak data for resident and staff cases and resident and staff deaths and number of facilities with a case. Virginia defines an outbreak as a facility with two cases in a 28-day period. An outbreak ends when 28 days have passed with no new confirmed case. Virginia labels. Outbreak data is gathered from both “pending closure” and “outbreak-in-progress” facility statuses listed in Virginia’s facility-level data.

Virginia provides facility-level data of resident and staff cases and deaths.

Virginia provides an asterisk * for digits between 0 and 5 to preserve anonymity of patients and staff in facilities. CTP converts all asterisks * to equal 1 in our calculations. We do this because Virginia reports 0’s for no data, so we assumed an * is at least a value of 1.

To remove any potential instances of double counting, the difference between the totals of the facility-level data page categories combined and the cumulative total presented on the dashboard is the remaining cases and deaths obscured by Virginia’s *. This remaining data is placed into the long-term care category.

  • June 3, 2020: The Virginia Long-Term Care Task Force published its first dataset.
  • June 22, 2020: CTP began breaking out cumulative and outbreak cases and deaths by facility type.
  • November 26, 2020: Number of Assisted Living Facilities with a COVID-19 case or death decreased by 2.
  • February 11, 2021: Nursing home facilities decreased by 1. Assisted living number of facilities decreased by 3. Resident and staff deaths decreased by 44.

The state provides facility-level cumulative data. The state provides facility-level outbreak data. Cumulative facility-level data was first reported by the state on 2020-07-02. Outbreak facility-level data was first reported by the state on 2020-07-02.

Because each state reports facility-level data differently, CTP has produced a number of scripts to make the dataset as standardized and comprehensive as possible. This state uses the following scripts: post_processing, standardize_data. More information on each of these scripts can be found in our Airtable Facility Script Annotations.
