State notes

Hawaii reports long-term-care COVID-19 data for Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities. CTP puts Adult Residential Care Facility the Lumped or Other Facilities category in our dataset. Hawaii reports outbreak data but not cumulative data. The state does provide facility-level data. Hawaii reports outbreak staff and resident cases separately but combines staff and resident deaths.

Hawaii does not provide cumulative long-term-care data.

Hawaii provides outbreak data for names of facilities with a case and number of facilities with a case. From September 11, 2020 - November 4, 2020, Hawaii released names of facilities with one staff or resident case within the last 28 days. After November 4th, Hawaii changed the window of days for outbreak data to 14 days.

Hawaii reports sporadic cumulative facility-level data in press releases. This information is in the dated notes below. Hawaii also reports a weekly list of the names of facilities experiencing an outbreak on the state COVID-19 dashboard. No case or death data is provided.

  • June 18, 2020: Hawaii reported in a press release that Hale Nani Rehabilitation and Nursing Center had 8 resident cases and 2 staff cases.
  • June 22, 2020: Hawaii reported in a press release that Hale Nani Rehabilitation and Nursing Center had 9 resident cases and 6 staff cases.
  • August 18, 2020: This is the only time Hawaii released comprehensive cumulative data in long-term-care facilities during the pandemic. In this release, Hawaii reported that nursing homes had 27 resident and 31 staff cases, and 1 death in 14 facilities, Assisted living facilities had 1 resident and 1 staff case, Adult Residential Care Facility, categorized as Lumped or Other Facilities in our dataset, had 6 resident and 4 staff cases, and 3 deaths in 4 facilities. Data carried until a new update was provided.
  • September 11, 2020, Hawaii began reporting names of facilities with at least one COVID-19 outbreak staff or resident case in the past 28 days. This includes facility name, facility type and county.
  • September 18, 2020: Hawaii reported 15 resident deaths at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. According to news reports, 27 residents died and over 100 residents and staff had COVID. Because these additional cases and deaths were not reported by the state, they are not included in our dataset.
  • November 4, 2020: Life Care Center of Hilo reported 55 resident cases, 17 staff cases and 10 resident deaths. Because these are not reported by the state, they are not included in our dataset.
  • November 6, 2020: Hawaii changed outbreak facility-level reporting from facilities in the past 28 days to cases in the past 14 days. According to the state dashboard, “Cases reported to the Hawaii Department of Health within the last 14 days and identified as having exposed staff and/or residents in the facility. The period of 14 days aligns with current cluster definitions used by the Council for Outbreak Response: Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial-Resistant Pathogens (CORHA).”
  • November 19, 2020: HI did not update facility-level outbreak data.
  • December 10, 2020: Hawaii reported 7 newly classified COVID-19 deaths in a long-term-care facility. These are added to the Lumped or Other Facilities category in the CTP dataset.
  • December 31, 2020: Hi did not update facility-level outbreak data.
  • April 22, 2021: CTP removed one Nursing Home staff/resident death from Oct 1, 2020 - March 5, 2021. This death was removed after a routine data quality check determined that Hawaii reclassified a resident death in Nursing Homes.
  • May 27, 2021: CTP went through Hawaii’s historical press releases and updated our dataset based on these reports.

Facility notes

The state does not provide facility-level data.

Because each state reports facility-level data differently, CTP has produced a number of scripts to make the dataset as standardized and comprehensive as possible. This state uses the following scripts: post_processing, standardize_data, close_outbreaks. More information on each of these scripts can be found in our Airtable Facility Script Annotations.
