We calculate daily changes based on the data states report each day. Some states report new cases, tests, and deaths using other methods. Please consult official state data sources for more information. We chart “New tests” using different units across jurisdictions, because not all states and territories report tests in the same units. Learn more about total test units and see what we chart for each jurisdiction in our total tests documentation.
We do not have a complete dataset for every metric in every state. If we have data for less than 30% of the past 90 days for a given metric, you’ll see a warning instead of a chart for that metric.
All the data for these charts is available for download. You can also review tabular national data on our US historical data page and data for each state and territory on the individual state or territory’s overview page.

We compute the number of cases and deaths per 100k people for each race and ethnicity.
These numbers show the scale of outcomes compared to the size of each group’s population. These are not the number of cases or deaths, rather the proportion of each demographic group who have been affected.

For the 2nd week in a row, LTC facilities reported the highest weekly death toll—over 7,000. It’s likely that winter holiday backlogs and a change in Iowa’s death reporting have influenced this high number.
January 21, 2021
On 10/16, IA reclassified ~10k tests from PCR to antigen, causing its totals to drop. NV redesigned its dashboard and removed the number of people who tested negative, a figure we used to calculate totals. We froze the figure, making NV’s tests appear as all positive for 5 days.

Today, ID is back, but we’re missing hospitalization updates from states including AL, AR, CT, IA, LA, MI, MO, MS, NH, OR, RI, SC, and WY. Some due to the new HHS directive, others because it’s the weekend. We will keep reporting on the availability of this data.

We want to send an appreciation to Iowa @IAPublicHealth, which made a major update to their data dashboard last week — and started breaking out race and ethnicity numbers for deaths. IA is now one of 10 states we're giving an A+ grade for data quality. https://t.co/CjltUSh6pR

@robMerriMath @michael_nielsen You're onto us, Robert. And yes. Now if only we can get the last holdout states to start reporting negatives and then FOIA the historical data, we'll complete the data set. (We hope.)
